The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
