No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
